Statement from Patrick Harvie:
The Scottish Green Party remains firmly committed to unilateral nuclear disarmament. We believe that weapons of mass destruction make the world inherently less safe, and our party conference this year will be asked to restate the principles of our defence policy in the context of the forthcoming referendum. This will include a rejection of the continued membership of NATO in the event of Scotland becoming independent.
For anyone opposed to nuclear weapons, whether voting Yes or No to independence, it should be clear that removing Trident from Scotland but continuing to rely on a nuclear alliance makes no sense. We would be placing an expectation on others to deploy nuclear weapons on our behalf, while pretending to occupy the moral high ground. The only truly anti-nuclear position is to say NO TO NATO.
